How we repair the roof edge
- Find the water source. Before replacing any wood, we check the gutters, drip edge and roof edge to see why the boards got wet.
- Remove the damaged sections. Rotted fascia and broken soffit come out, and we check the rafter tails behind them.
- Repair the framing. Damaged rafter ends and blocking are repaired with exterior carpentry when needed.
- Install new boards and panels. New fascia and soffit go in, with vented soffit where the attic needs air.
- Finish the edge. Drip edge and gutters go back on so water stays off the new wood.
Why it matters in Lake County
Ice dams are common in northern Illinois, and the roof edge is where they form. Meltwater that backs up behind the ice soaks the fascia and soffit, then freezes again overnight. Good attic ventilation through the soffits, plus solid drip edge and gutters, keeps that cycle from destroying the edge of your roof.
