Is a pergola right for your backyard?
A pergola is a good fit if you want to:
- Define an outdoor dining or lounge area
- Add partial shade over a deck or patio
- Create a frame for plants, lights or curtains
- Give your backyard a finished, architectural look
How we build a pergola
- Design. We look at the space, sun direction and how you want to use it, and size the pergola to match.
- Permit. We check whether your town requires a permit and what it needs.
- Footings or deck support. Posts sit on proper footings, or on deck framing that is reinforced to carry them.
- Posts and beams. Posts are set plumb and the beams are fastened and braced against wind.
- Rafters and slats. The top is built to the pattern and spacing you chose.
- Finish and cleanup. The site is cleaned and the wood is ready for stain or sealer.
Built for snow and wind
In Lake County a pergola has to handle more than summer sun. Wet snow collects on the slats in winter, and storms off Lake Michigan push on the whole structure. We build with solid connections, bracing and footings that sit below where the ground freezes, so your pergola stays straight for years.
