How we install a fence

  1. Measure and plan. We walk the fence line with you, mark gates and corners and confirm the property line from your survey.
  2. Permit and utilities. We check the permit requirements for your town and make sure underground utilities are marked through 811.
  3. Set the posts. Posts are set deep enough for northern Illinois frost, plumb and in a straight line.
  4. Rails and boards. Rails and boards are fastened to the posts with consistent spacing and height.
  5. Gates. Gates are framed to resist sagging and hung so they swing and latch smoothly.
  6. Cleanup. Spoils and scrap are hauled away.

Fences that stand up to Lake County winters

Frost heave is the number one reason fences fail in this area. Ground that freezes and thaws all winter lifts posts that are too shallow, and the fence slowly leans out of line. Proper post depth, drainage at the base of each post and solid rails are what keep a fence straight.

A new fence pairs well with a deck or pergola to finish the backyard. Call (224) 772-4836 or request a free estimate.

Fences FAQ

Fences questions in Lake County

Do I need a permit for a fence in Lake County?

Most towns require one. Gurnee, for example, publishes its own fence requirements, and many towns limit fence height and location. If you have an HOA, check its rules too. We confirm the requirements for your address before we start.

Who marks underground utilities before digging fence posts?

In Illinois, utilities are marked through JULIE (call 811), and in Wisconsin through Diggers Hotline (also 811). Lines have to be marked before any post holes are dug.

Why do fence posts lean or heave?

Frost. When wet soil freezes, it expands and pushes shallow posts up and out of line. Posts set deep enough, with good drainage at the bottom, stay put.

Can you repair part of my fence instead of replacing it?

Yes. Broken boards, leaning sections, failed posts and sagging gates can usually be repaired. If most of the posts are rotted, replacing the fence is the better investment.

Do you know where my property line is?

The property line has to come from you, usually from your plat of survey. We build to the line you confirm, and some towns ask for the survey with the permit application.
