How we build a deck

  1. Design and estimate. We measure the space, talk through size, stairs and railings and put the scope in writing.
  2. Permit. Most Lake County towns require a deck permit with a site plan. We check the requirements for your town.
  3. Footings and posts. Footings set the deck’s foundation, below where the ground freezes.
  4. Framing. Ledger, beams and joists are installed square and level, with the ledger flashed against the house.
  5. Boards, stairs and railings. Decking goes down and stairs and railings are built solid.
  6. Inspection and cleanup. Inspections are scheduled as required and the yard is cleaned up.

Decks built for northern Illinois

Lake County has hot summers and long, cold winters. Frost heave can lift footings that are not deep enough, and snow sitting on the boards keeps them wet for weeks. A deck built on proper footings, with good drainage and flashing at the house, handles those seasons year after year.

Pair your deck with a privacy fence or a pergola to finish the backyard. Call (224) 772-4836 or request a free estimate.

Decks FAQ

Decks questions in Lake County

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Lake County?

In most towns, yes. Gurnee, Waukegan and other Lake County communities have their own deck permit requirements, usually with a site plan and inspections. We check the rules for your town before we start.

Should I repair or replace my old deck?

If the framing and posts are solid, new boards and railings can give it a second life. If the joists, beams, ledger or posts are rotted, a rebuild is the safe choice. We check the structure first.

How long does it take to build a deck?

It depends on the size, height, stairs and the permit and inspection schedule in your town. We give you a timeline with the estimate.

What is a ledger board and why does it matter?

The ledger is the board that attaches the deck to the house. It has to be properly fastened and flashed, because water getting behind it can rot both the deck and the house framing.

Can you add a pergola to my deck?

Yes. A pergola can be built on a new or existing deck when the framing can carry it. Planning both together is the easiest way.
