Roof Inspection & Storm Damage in Waukegan, IL

After a hail or wind storm, damage is not always visible from the ground. We inspect the roof, document what we find and help you understand the insurance process, step by step.

What we check during a roof inspection

An inspection is a careful look at the whole roofing system, not a quick glance from a ladder.

  • Shingles: bruising, cracks, missing pieces and granule loss
  • Flashing at chimneys, walls, skylights and valleys
  • Plumbing vent boots, roof vents and exhaust caps
  • Drip edge, fascia and the condition of the gutters
  • Signs of ice dam damage along the eaves
  • Attic ventilation, stains and soft spots in the deck, when we can access the attic

You get a plain-language explanation of what we found and photos of the problem areas.

Storm damage: what to look for

Lake County gets its share of severe weather, from spring and summer hail to strong winds off Lake Michigan. After a storm, walk around the house and look for:

  • Shingles or pieces of shingles in the yard
  • Dents in gutters, downspouts, vents or the siding
  • Granules collected at the bottom of downspouts
  • New water stains on ceilings or in the attic
  • Lifted or creased shingles along the ridge and roof edges

If you see any of these, schedule an inspection before the next storm.

How we help with the insurance process

We are not adjusters, and we do not file claims for homeowners. Here is what we can do:

  1. Inspect and document. We photograph the damage and explain what it means for your roof.
  2. Explain the process. We walk you through how storm claims usually work, so you know what to expect from your insurer.
  3. Answer your questions. While your claim moves forward, you can call us with questions about the roof and what the damage means.
  4. Write a clear estimate. You get the scope of work for the repair or replacement in writing.

Illinois rules homeowners should know

Illinois protects homeowners after storms. A roofing contractor must hold a state license, with the license number on contracts and advertising. Contractors cannot pay or rebate your deductible and cannot represent you on an insurance claim. For storm damage that hits more than one home, you can cancel the contract within 5 business days of learning your claim is not covered. O&C Contractors works by these rules on every job.

Roof Inspection & Storm Damage FAQ

Roof Inspection & Storm Damage questions in Lake County

How can I tell if hail damaged my roof?

Look for dents on gutters, downspouts, vents and window screens, and for granules washing out of the downspouts. On the roof, hail leaves bruised or cracked shingles with bare spots. Most of it is not visible from the ground, so an inspection is the safest way to know.

Do you file the insurance claim for me?

No. We are roofing contractors, not public adjusters, and in Illinois a contractor cannot file a claim or negotiate it on your behalf. What we do is inspect the roof, document the damage with photos and help you understand each step of the process with your insurance company.

Will you pay my insurance deductible?

No. Illinois law does not allow roofing contractors to pay or rebate any part of an insurance deductible, and you should be cautious with anyone who offers to.

How soon after a storm should I get my roof inspected?

As soon as you can. Small damage turns into leaks with the next storm, and insurance policies set time limits for reporting damage. Check your policy for the exact deadline.

How long does a roof inspection take?

The visit usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. We check the roof surface, flashing, vents, gutters and, when possible, the attic, and then go over the findings with you.

Can I cancel a roofing contract if my insurance denies the claim?

For storm damage that affects more than one home in the area, Illinois gives homeowners the right to cancel within 5 business days of learning the claim is not covered. That right has to be written into the contract.
